Question

AgCl is more soluble in water than AgBr.

Open in App
Solution

Ag is a large-sized molecule with a high molecular mass and radius. As we go down the group in a periodic table, we observe that the atomic radius generally increases. A large molecule has a better interaction with another large molecule(in this case I), and hence will not dissociate easily, let alone be soluble in another liquid forming new macromolecular bonds. Thus the solubility of Ag with halogens decreases down the group.
Hence AgCl is more soluble in water than AgBr.
