Question

air contain 20% O2 by volume. how many c.c air will be required for oxidation of 100 cc of acetylene

Open in App
Solution

The reaction taking place is as follows:
2C2H2 + 5O2 → 4CO2 + 2H2O
Here, we can see that,
2 cc of C2H2 reacts with 5 cc of O2
Therefore, for 100 cc of C2H2,
Amount of O2 required = (5/2) x 100 = 250 cc
Given,
Air contains 20% O2 by volume
Thus,(20/100) x Amount of air = 250 cc
Hence,
Amount of air required = 250 x (100/20) = 1250 cc
