Penicillin is the first produced antibiotic. It was first discovered in 1929 by Alexander Fleming. He observed that some bacteria growing in a culture were destroyed by an accidental contamination of a mould penicillium notatum. He discovered that this mould produced a substance which suppressed the growth of many bacteria, and the substance was named penicillin.
