All four charges in figure have the same magnitude. At point P,the electric field produced by these charge is directed toward the left. Charge $q_{1}$ is negative. What are the signs of $q_{2}, q_{3}, q_{4}$ ?

Solution

Electric field lines go from positive to negative charge.
As there is no electric field component in the vertical direction,it follows that $q_{3}$ is also negative,so that vertical electric field component cancel out.
Since the electric field is towards the left,it follows that $q_{4}$ is positive and $q_{2}$ is negative since electric field lines flow from positive to negative charges.
