Solution

  • Ammonia (NH3) reacts with hydrogen chloride gas (HCl) to give white fumes of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl).
  • The reaction is as follows:
    NH3(g)+HCl(g)NH4Cl(g)
  • Excess ammonia reacts with chlorine gas (Cl2) to form ammonium chloride which gives white fumes.
  • 8NH3(g)+3Cl2(g)6NH4Cl(g)+N2(g)

Therefore, chlorine gas also gives white fumes with ammonia.
