Question

Ammonium chloride crystallises in a body centered cubic lattice with a unit distance of 386 pm. Calculate the radius (in pm) of NH+4 ion. If the radius of Cl ion is 181 pm
(Take 3=1.73)

Solution

In a body- centered cubic lattice, oppositely charged ions touch each other along the cross- diagonal of the cube.
So,
2rc+2ra=3a
rc+ra=32a
=32×386=333.89 pm
Given that,
ra=181 pm
rc=(333.89181.0) pm=152.89 pm
