Question

Among NH3,H2O and HF, which would you expect to have highest magnitude of hydrogen bonding and why?

Solution

H2O has the highest magnitude of H bonding.
The extent of Hbonding depends upon electronegativity and the number of Hatoms available for bonding. Although F is more electronegative than oxygen, the extent of H bonding is higher in water. There is a shortage of H in HF, whereas there are exactly the right numbers of H in H2O. Hence oxygen forms a huge ring like structure. In case of NH3, the Hbonding is limited because N has only one lone pair.
