Question

Among the following, in how many cases equilibrium CaCO3(s)CaO(s)+CO2(g) will shift in forward direction?
(i) addition of CaCO3(s)
(ii) addition of CaO(s)
(iii) addition of CO2(g)
(iv) addition of N2 at constant volume
(v) addition of N2 at constant pressure

Solution

According to the lechatlier principle
If the concentration of reactants increased the product formation is favored that is forward reaction.
If the pressure is increased the the reaction favors in that direction where the volume is decreased.
For endothermic reaction reaction favors forward direction when the temperature is increased.
According to the above principles only in the case of (i) and (Vi) equilibrium shifts in forward direction.
