Question

An 80Ω resistor and 20μF capacitor are connected in series with AC source 220V and 50Hz . Calculate the P.D. across each of them.

Open in App
Solution

The reactance is given as,

XC=12πfC

XC=12π×50×20×106

XC=159.15Ω

The impedance is given as,

Z=R2+XC2

Z=(80)2+(159.15)2

Z=178.13Ω

The current in the circuit is given as,

I=VZ

I=220178.13

I=1.235A

The potential drop across the resistance is given as,

VR=IR

VR=1.235×80

VR=98.8Ω

The potential drop across the capacitor is given as,

VC=IXC

VC=1.235×159.15

VC=196.56Ω
