An alkyl halide by the formation of its Grignard reagent and heating with water gives propane. What is the original alkyl halide?
When propyl bromide reacts magnesium in presence of dry ether; it's form grignard reagent i.e. propyl magnesium bromide.
Grignard reagent reacts with compound containing active hydrogen to form hydrocarbon so when propyl magnesium bromide reacts with water it produces propane. This is because grignard reagent act as strong base which react with the active hydrogen of water that is -H of H2O to form alkane.
