Question

An aluminium rod with another alloy are bonded together at 20C to form a bimetal sensor. The length of the bimetal rod at 20C is 10 m. How much the rod will expand (in mm) when the temperature is changed from 0C to 100C? The expansion coefficient of aluminium is 2.5×106/C.

Solution

The correct option is A 25
The expansion in the lengthof a metal due to tempertaure is given by,

l=lo(1+γ.ΔT)

lo=Original length ΔT=(TTo)

γ=liner expansion coefficient

at 0C the length is :

l1=10[1+25×106×(020)]

l1=9.995 m

And at 100C the length is

l2=10[1+25×106×(10020)]

l2=10.02 m

Thus the expansion is:

l2l1=10.029.995

=25 mm
