The maximum number of electrons present in a shell in given by 2n2 where n is the number of that shell.

Atom X has 10 electrons.
  • For K shell: n = 1. The maximum number of electrons present in a shell in given by 2n2 = 2
  • For L shell: n = 2. The maximum number of electrons present in a shell in given by 2n2 = 8
  • Hence, there will be 2 electrons in K shell and remaining 8 electrons in L shell. M shell will not accomodate any electron.
