Question

An electric blub of 60W is used for 6h per day. Calculate the units of energy consumed in one day by the bulb.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data:

Power of the bulb is P=60W=60J/s

Total number of hours the bulb is used in 1dayist=6hours=(6hours)x(3600s/hour)=21600s

Step -2 Finding the energy consumed:

1W signifies that 1J of energy is consumed in 1s.

So, a 60W bulb will consume60J of energy in 1s.

Mathematically we can see that Energy=powerxtime,orE=pxt where E is the total energy consumed.

The magnitude of energy is E=(60J/s)x(21600s)=1296000J=1.296x106J

Step -3 Finding the energy in units:

Since, ⁣1unit=1kWh=3.6x106J

Then, energy in units = 1.296x106J3.6x106J=0.36units

Thus, 0.36units of energy is consumed in one day by the bulb.
