Question

An electric dipole has a fixed dipole moment p , which makes angle θ with respect to xaxis. When subjected to an electric field E1=E^i , it experiences a torque T1=τ(^k.) When subjected to another electric field E2=3E1^j it experiences torque T2=(T)1. The angle θ is

Solution

The correct option is A 60
We know that τ=p×E

It is given that, τ1=T1=τ^k
when

p=px^i+py^j

=pcosθ^i+psinθjˆ

and E=E1=E^i

Put above value in formula

τ^k=(px^i+pyjˆ)×E^i

Since ^i×^i=0 and ^j×^i=^k

py=τE (1)

Now also given τ2=T2=T1=τ^k

when p=px^i+py^j

=pcosθ^i+psinθ^j

and E=E2=3E1^j

Put above value in formula

τ^k=(px^i+py^j)×3E^j

Since ^j×^j=0 and ^i×^j=^k

px=τ3E (2)

Dividing equation (1) and (2), we have

pypx=3

Also tanθ=pypx

tanθ=3

θ=60
