Question

An electric dipole with dipole moment 4 × 10–9 C m is aligned at 30°with the direction of a uniform electric field of magnitude 5 × 104 NC–1.Calculate the magnitude of the torque acting on the dipole.

Solution

Given: The electric dipole moment of the system is 4× 10 9 C-m, angle between electric dipole and uniform electric field is 30° and electric field is 5× 10 4 N/C.

The torque acting on the dipole is given as,

τ=pEsinθ

Where, p is the electric dipole moment of the system, E is the electric field and θ is the angle between uniform electric field and electric dipole moment.

By substituting the given values in the above equation, we get

τ=4× 10 9 ×5× 10 4 ×sin30° =20× 10 5 × 1 2 = 10 4 N-m

Thus, the magnitude of the torque acting on the dipole is 10 4 N-m.
