An electrical appliance having a resistance of 200Ω is operated at 200V. What is the energy consumed in kWh ?
The electric power in watts associated with a complete electric circuit or a circuit component represents the rate at which energy is converted from the electrical energy of the moving charges to some other form, e.g., heat, mechanical energy, or energy stored in electric fields or magnetic fields. The power is given by the product of applied voltage and the electric current. That is, P=VI.
Substituting I=V/R
in the above formula, we get, P=V2R.
Therefore, the power dissipated is P=2002200=200W.
To calculate kWh, we take the wattage of the
device, multiply that by the number of hours it's used, and divide by
1,000. In this case, time taken is 5 minutes, that is the hours
the device used is 0.083 hours.
Hence, the energy consumed in 5
minutes is 200W×0.083hours1000=0.0166kWh.
