Question

An electrochemical cell is constructed by immersing a piece of copper wire in 50 ml of 0.1 M CuSO4 solution and zinc strip in 50 ml of 0.1 M ZnSO4 solution
[ E0Cu2+/Cu= 0.34 V, E0Zn2+/Zn= -0.76 V ]

Solution

The correct option is A ZnSO4 solution
When NH3 is added to ZnSO4 solution, NH3 reacts with Zn2+ in the following manner:
Zn2+ + 4NH3 [Zn(NH3)4] 2+
i.e., [Zn2+] decreases
In the equation
E=E°0.05912log[Zn2+][Cu2+]
If [Zn2+] decreases then log[Zn2+][Cu2+] decreases .Hence, EMF of cell increases.
