Question

An electron beam after being accelerated from rest through a potential difference of 500V in vacuum is allowed to impinge normally on a fixed surface. If the incident current is 100μA, the force exerted on the surface is 3x2×109N assuming that it brings the electrons to rest. Find x. (e=1.6×1019C;m=9.0×1031C)

Solution

Energy of electron is eV
dq/dt=A=100×106A
So, total charge in 1 second is 100×106C=104C
number of electron is n=104/1.6×1019=6.25×1014
Velocity of electron is mv2/2=eVv=2eV/m
so, force is F=n×m×2eV/m=152×109N
So, x=15
