Question

An electron collides with an hydrogen atom In it's ground state and excites it to a state of n=3 How much energy was given to the hydrogen atom in this inelastic collision

Open in App
Solution

Energy given to hydrogen atom = difference in energy levels from n = 1 to n' = 3 states .

E = 13.6(1/n^2 - 1/n'^2)
= 13.6(1/1^2 − 1/3^2)
= 12.1eV
