Question

An element has electronic configuration 2,8,8,1. Write the symbol for the ions of X.

Solution

Types of ions: An element can form two types of ions-

  1. Cation: When an atom loses its valence shell electron to achieve stability, it forms a positively charged ion, cation.
  2. Anion: When an atom gains an electron to achieve stability, it forms a negatively charged ion, anion.

Reason to form Cation: As the element has electronic configuration 2,8,8,1, it prefers to lose the valence electron to achieve the stable completely filled valence shell with 2,8,8 configuration.

Hence, the symbol of ion of X is X+.
