Question

An impure sample of As2O3 weighing 20 gm was dissolved in water containing 10 gm of NaHCO3 and the final solution was diluted to 400mL. 20 mL of this solution was oxidised by 25 mL of a solution of I2. Another solution of hypo containing 1.24 gm of Na2S2O3.5H2O in 40 mL was used to exactly reduce 25 mL of same I2 solution (impurities inert) calculate % of As2O3 in the sample (at. wt. of As = 75)

Solution

As2O3 is oxidised to As2O5

Mhypo=1.24×1000248×40=0.125
meq. of hypo=meq. of I2 in 25 mL=0.125×1×40=5
meq. of I2=meq. of As2O3=5
meq. of As2O3 in 20 mL solution=5So, meq. of As2O3 in 400 mL=5×40020=100
mole of As2O3=100×1032=50×103=0.05
Weight of As2O3=0.05×198=9.9 g
Weight%=9.920×100=49.5%
