Solution

The correct option is D pseudocopulation

In some orchids, e.g:- Ophrys speculum, the shape, size, odour and colour of the flowers resemble that of a female moth Colpa. The orchid employs a mechanism called sexual deceit to lure the moth into pollinating the flowers. The male moth mistakes the orchid flower for the female moth and tries to copulate (pseudocopulation). In this attempt, it pollinates the flower.

The word ‘pseudo’ is used to describe a false action. ‘Pseudocopulation’ means the act of copulation which does not involve the actual sexual union of two individuals.

The transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma (of the same flower or different flower) is called pollination. The term ‘pseudopollination’ is not used to describe any biological phenomenon.

Parthenocarpy is the process by which fruits are developed from unfertilised ovules in plants. These fruits don’t contain seeds. Pseudo parthenocarpy is defined as the type of parthenogenesis in which the male gamete is needed to initiate the growth of the egg but fertilisation does not happen.

Polygamy in animals refers to a phenomenon in which a single male individual has sexual relationships with many female individuals. When there are both unisexual and bisexual flowers on the same plant then it is termed as polygamous plant.
