Question

An iron wire is immersed in a solution containing ZnSO4 and NiSO4. Predict giving reasons which of the following reactions is likely to proceed?
(i) Iron reduces Zn2+ ions (ii) Iron reduces Ni2+ ions.
Given: EZn2+/Zn=0.76 volt;EFe2+/Fe=0.44 volt and ENi2+/Ni=0.25 volt.

Solution

When iron is immersed in ZnSO4, no reaction will occur as iron is less reactive than Zn2+ and cannot displace Zn2+ from ZnSO4.
When iron is immersed in NiSO4 , it will displace Ni2+ from NiSO4 and form FeSO4, because Fe2+ is more reactive and has reduction potential less than Ni2+ and hence iron oxidises & displaces Ni2+ from NiSO4
