An object, a convex lens of focal length 20 cm and a plane mirror are arranged as shown in the figure. How far behind the mirror is the image after refraction from lens and reflection from mirror is formed?

The correct option is C 40 cm
Given data for lens:

object distance, u1=12 cm
focal length, f1=20 cm
Let, the image is formed at distance v1.

Applying lens formula for first refraction,

1v11u1=1f1

Substituting the values given in the problem,

1v11(12)=120

1v1=130

v1=30 cm

This image will act as an object for the plane mirror.

For first reflection at plane mirror:

Object distance,
u2=(30+10)=40 cm

Thus, image distance, v2=(u2)=(40) cm=40 cm


Hence, option (c) is correct answer.
