Question

An ordinary mercury thermometer is first put in a beaker containing dry ice and is then transferred into another beaker containing dry ice and is then transferred into another beaker containing hot water. The mercury thread rises four-fifth of the distance between the lower and upper fixed points. Find the temperature of water in
(1) in degree Celsius, and (2) in degree Fahrenheit.

Solution

The lower fixed point = 00C

The upper fixed point = 1000C

Difference between lower and upper fixed point = 1000C – 00C = 1000C

The temperature of the liquid = 4/5×1000C

= 800 C

In Kelvin = 80 + 273 = 353 K

F = 9/5 × C + 32 = 176 0F
