Question

An organic compound (A) of molecular formula C6H6O gives violet colour with neutral ferric chloride. Compound (A) when heated with zinc dust gives a hydrocarbon (B). Also compound (A) reacts with phthalic anhydride and conc. H2SO4 to give compound (C) of molecular formula C20H14O4. Identify (A), (B) and (C). Explain the reactions.

Solution

Phenol reacts with ferric chloride (FeCl3) and gives violet colour. Hence the compound A is phenol (C6H5OH).
C6H5OHZn dust−−−ZnOC6H6(BBenzene)
C6H5OH+phthalic anhydrideConc. H2SO4−−−−−−−Phenolphthalein (Image attached)
Hence the compound A,B and C are phenol, benzene and phenolphthalein respectively.
