Question

An organic compound C(molecular formula C2 H4 O2) reacts with sodium metal to form a compound B and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound.Compound C on treatment with an alcohol A in presence of an acid forms a sweet smelling compound S(molecular formula C4 H8 O2).On addition of sodium hydroxide to C it also gives B and water.S on treatment with Sodium Hydroxide solution gives back B and A.
Identify A,B,C and and write chemical equation for all the four reactions involved.

Solution

Compound C is CH3COOH.
Compound R is CH3COONa
Compound A is CH3OH
Compound S is CH3COOCH3
Chemical reaction in sequence are as follows:
CH3COOH + Na →CH3COONa + H2
CH3OH + CH3COOH+ acid ⇒ CH3COOCH3+ H2O
CH3COOH + NaOH → CH3COONa + H2O
CH3COOCH3 + NaOH → CH3COONa + CH3OH
