Question

an organic compound containing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen present in the ratio 3:1:3.5. find out its molecular formula if the vapour density is 60

Open in App
Solution

Dear student
Relative molecular mass = 2 x vapour density
= 2x 60
= 120

Ratio of C:H:N is 3:1:3.5In order to determine the no.of atoms present in the molecular formula, we calculate the weight of each element on the molecular weight 120Wt.of C= 3 x 120/7.5 =48Thus , no.of C atoms = 48/12 =4Wt. Of H atom= 1×120/7.5 =16no.of H atom = 16/2 =8Wt.of N atom =3.5×120/7.5 = 56no.of N atom =56/14 = 4The molecular formula is thusC4H8N4
