  1. An oscillatory motion is always periodic but a periodic motion is not always oscillatory.
  2. Oscillatory motion: The motion of an object in which the object moves to and fro about its mean position is called oscillatory motion.
  3. Periodic motion: The motion which repeat itself at fixed intervals of time is called periodic motion.
  4. Because motion repeats itself at regular intervals around the mean location, every oscillatory motion is periodic, however, not all periodic motions are oscillatory.
  5. For example: The earth rotates around the sun, but it does not move back and forth in its mean position.
  6. As a result, its motion is periodic rather than oscillatory.
