Iron ore is the basic mineral and is considered to be the backbone of Industrial development.. Major iron belts in India are:

​1.Orissa-Jharkhand belt: Important iron ore mines are located in this belt, this includes Gua , Noamundi​, Badampaha​r mines. The region is rich in hematite ore​.
2. Durg-Bastar belt: The region comprises of 14 high grade hematite ore, iron ore from this belt is also exported to many countries like South Korea, Japan

3. ​Maharashtra Goa belt: Iron ore in this belt is also exported from Marmagao port​, iron ore in this region is optimally exploited
4. ​Bellary-Chitradurga-Chikmaglur-Tumkur Belt: Kudermukh mines​ in this region serves as a major export, the mines indeed are the largest in the World.
