Coloured images are perceived by photoreceptor cells in the retina. Photoreceptor cells are of two kinds, rods and cones. Rods contain rhodopsin pigment and associated with scotopic vision or vision under low light. Cones contain three pigments, iodopsin, porpyrosin and cyanopsin all of which contain photopsin protein and are associated with daylight vision.
The light rays enter the eyes and impulses are generated that are transmitted to the visual cortex area of the brain where the image formed on retina is recognized.
