Let $x$ represent the amount Anita invested at $8 %$ and let $y$ represent the amount the invested at $9 %$ .
The amount invested at $9 %$ was Rs. $400$ more than at $8 %$ .
Hence, $y = x + 400$
The yearly interest from the two investments was Rs. $87.$
Hence, $0.08 x + 0.09 y = 87$
From the first equation we can substitute $x + 400$ for $y$ in the second equation and solve for $x$ .
$0.08 x + 0.09 (x + 400) = 87$
$8 x + 9 (x + 400) = 8700$
$8 x + 9 x + 3600 = 8700$
$17 x = 5100$
