In the year 1990, the Human Genome Project was started by National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) in the United States in collaboration with the Department of Energy. The aim was to determine the sequence of nucleotides in the entire human genome. Genome sequencing can be used in identification of disease-causing genes and their elimination, the introduction of new genes that code for a desired proteins and in exploiting polymorphism to compare DNA samples from two individuals.
