The published accounts of European travellers show that India in the seventeenth and early part of the eighteenth century was economically more advanced than most of the European countries. Traders from various parts of the world visited and exchanged their gold, silver and other precious stones with cotton textiles, saltpetre, indigo, tobacco, silk, etc.
