Question

Answer the following questions: (a) When a low flying aircraft passes overhead, we sometimes noticea slight shaking of the picture on our TV screen. Suggest apossible explanation. (b) As you have learnt in the text, the principle of linearsuperposition of wave displacement is basic to understandingintensity distributions in diffraction and interference patterns. What is the justification of this principle?

Solution

a)

The low flying aircraft sent weak radar signals. These signals are interfere with the TV signals received by the antenna. As a result the TV signals get distorted.

Thus, when a low flying air craft is passes overhead, we sometimes notice shaking of the picture of the TV screen.

b)

The principle of linear superposition of wave displacement follows from the linear character of a differential equation that governs wave motion. If y 1 and y 2 be the solutions of the second order wave equation then any linear combination of y 1 and y 2 be also the solution of wave equation.

Thus, the principle of linear superposition of wave’s displacement is necessary to understand the distribution in interference and diffraction patterns.
