Are asexually produced offsprings likely to be genetically identical or different?

Open in App
Solution

1: Asexual reproduction
Asexual reproduction refers to the mode of reproduction in one parent is involved in the formation of offspring without the fusion of gametes. The organisms divide itselves by means of various methods like binary fission, budding, vegetative propagation, spore formation (sporogenesis), fragmentation and parthenogenesis, to produce their own copies.

2: Genetic constitution of offspring
In asexual reproduction, only a single parent is involved. So, the offspring produced are genetically identical to the parent and to each other as well. Such offspring are called clones. Hence, the offspring are genetically identical to themselves and their parents.
