Question

Are DNA fragments negatively charged?

Open in App
Solution

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid):

  1. DNA is a nucleic acid & hereditary material found in humans and other living organisms.
  2. It has a double helical structure and is composed of nucleotides (a sugar group, a phosphate group, and a nitrogen base).

Charge on DNA fragments

  1. DNA fragments have phosphate groups present in nucleotides. The resultant bond between phosphorous and oxygen atoms is negative, thus rendering the DNA backbone a negative charge.
  2. Therefore, when placed under an electric field in gel electrophoresis, DNA molecules start moving towards the positive electrode.
