Question

Are ferns sporophyte dominant?

Open in App
Solution

Ferns

  1. Ferns are pteridophytes that belong to the kingdom Plantae. They are mostly found in damp and shady areas.
  2. They do not produce flowers or seeds hence called cryptogams.
  3. They are vascular plants with true stems, roots, and complex leaves.
  4. Ferns reproduce by both sexual and asexual modes of reproduction. The dominant phase in their life cycle is sporophyte.
  5. Sporophytes bear sporangia that produce spores. Ferns reproduce through spores.
  6. The haploid spore produced develops into a haploid gametophyte. In the presence of moisture, fertilization occurs and a diploid sporophyte is formed.
