Solution

Fungi

  1. Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that are unicellular or multicellular.
  2. They are called heterotrophs since they depend on other living organisms for nutrition.
  3. They are classified into three categories based on their mode of nutrition-
    1. Saprophyte- they obtain nutrition from dead and decaying organic matter (e.g., Penicillium),
    2. Parasitic fungi- they obtain nutrition from other living organisms (e.g., Puccinia), and
    3. Symbiont-they form a beneficial relationship with their host and obtain nutrients (e.g., Mycorrhiza).
  4. Fungi are not plants. They lack chlorophyll; hence cannot produce food on their own.
