Question

Are natural selection and descent with modification the same?

Open in App
Solution

Natural Selection:

  1. It is a process of evolution wherein, organisms that are able to survive & reproduce are selected by the nature. Whereas, organisms that cannot survive & reproduce are naturally eliminated.
  2. It simply means, survival of the fittest.
  3. Example- Millions of years ago, giraffes are believed to have shorter necks. Their necks elongated as a result of their feeding habits. Such genes were passed on to future generations. This process continued for millions of years. Present giraffes are naturally selected ones.

Descent with Modification:

  1. Darwin defined evolution as “descent with modification”.
  2. It is the idea that species change over time, giving rise to new species. And such species share a common ancestor.
  3. The presence of different types of beaks in finches results in access to a particular food type. This type of change led to the process of natural selection of a particular type of individuals in the given population.
  4. Natural selection is a process. However, descent with modification is the outcome. Therefore, both are not considered the same.
