Are prokaryotes bigger than eukaryotes?

Open in App
Solution

Prokaryotes:

  1. Single-celled organisms lack a proper nucleus and other organelles.
  2. Their genetic material is present on one chromosome and it lacks histone molecules.
  3. They may contain plasmids, inclusions, flagellum, and ribosomes
  4. Examples- bacteria, archaea, and cyanobacteria.

Eukaryotes:

  1. Multicellular organisms with a proper nucleus and other important organelles.
  2. They are up to ten times bigger than prokaryotes due to the presence of complex organelles and high amounts of DNA.
  3. Examples- are plants, animals, fungi, and protists.
  4. Prokaryotes are usually much smaller than Eukaryotes.
  5. Smaller sizes in prokaryotes help them easily adapt to varying environments and for easier diffusion.
