Question

Are prokaryotic flagella made of microtubules?

Open in App
Solution

Microtubules:

  1. They are microscopic, hollow tubes made of alpha & beta-tubulin (a part of the cytoskeleton).
  2. They extend throughout the cell, thus providing proper shape & structure to the cell.
  3. They also help in cell movement, cell division & cell transport.
  4. They are found in eukaryotic cells.

Flagella:

  1. These microscopic hair-like appendages help the cell in locomotion.
  2. Prokaryotic flagella are made up of a protein called flagellin and not microtubules.
