Bengal was divided on 16th October, 1905 The whole of Bengal observed the day as ‘National Mourning Day’.

The English adopted the ‘Divide and Rule’ policy to create conflicts between Hindus and Muslims. Muslim League was formed in 1906 as a part of this strategy.

In 1919, the British government framed the Rowlatt Acts. According to this act, any suspicious person could be arrested and jailed without conducting any trial against him or her.

In February, 1922, in the village of Chauri Chaura of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, things went out of control. The enraged crowd set fire to the police station, and 22 policemen were burnt alive.
