Question

Arrange the three states of matter in order of increasing inter particle space.

Solution

Interparticle space: Interparticle space is defined as the space present between the particles of a particular state of matter.

  • Interparticle space is dependent on the intermolecular force of attraction that is exerted between the particles of matter.
  • The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.
  • When we consider Solid the particles are closely packed so the intermolecular force is maximum
  • Liquids have lesser inter-particle force therefore they have lesser intermolecular space between the molecules.
  • Gases have the least force between them.
  • Therefore, the increasing order of three states of matter on basis of inter-particle space are solid < liquid < gas.
