Question

As shown in the figure above, two compartments are separated by a porous membrane that is permeable to ionic salts. A sodium chloride solution is placed in one compartment while distilled water is placed in the other. Factors that influence the initial rate at which the water diffuses into the compartment containing the NaCl solution include which of following?
I. Concentration of the sodium chloride solution
II. Area of the porous membrane
III. Temperature of the system

Solution

The correct option is D I, II and III only
  • Factors Affecting Diffusion Rate:
    • 1. Concentration - larger is the concentration, faster is the rate of diffusion.
    • 2. Temperature - as the temp. rises particles move faster and diffusion rate increases
    • 3. Size of molecules - smaller molecules diffuse more readily than do larger ones
    • 4. Viscosity - if a solution is thick like syrup, diffusion will occur more slowly.
    • 5. Molecular weight - heavier usually diffuse more slowly, but shape of molecule may also affect diffusion.
    • 6. More is the area of permeable membrane more will be the rate of diffusion.
