Question

As we all read in first chapter that pie is irrational. And 22/7 is approximate value because 22/7 is rational number ( non terminating repeating ). We know that pie is ratio of circumfrence and diameter. We have a circle with diameter 7 cm. So, circumfrence is 22 cm. And obviously both 22 and 7 is rational. So as pie is equal to (circumfrence/diameter) which is stated irrational but here pie is (22/7) as c/d. And we were taught in 7th grade that ( rational / rational ) is always a rational number. So, this contadicts the fact that pie is irrational. So how can we say pie as irrational.

Solution

Dear student, circumference/diameter = pi, that is true, but in the abstract world of mathematics as pi being irrational so circumference or diameter one has to irrational or both has to be irrational. But in the real world, we usually consider pi as approximate value of 22/7.
