Question

As we see the reactivity series, silver is a highly unreactive metal. Then what causes the silver metal to corrode?

Solution

The oxygen in air does not react with silver easily because silver is a highly unreactive metal. Nevertheless, air contains some sulphur compounds, including hydrogen sulfide gas. Silver is highly attractive to sulphur. Thus, silver gets corroded by H2S gas in presence of moisture and air pollutants.
