Ashu is x years old while his mother Mrs Veena is $x^2$ years old. Five years hence Mrs Veena will be three times old as Ashu. Find their present ages.

Ashu present age be x

Veena present age be $x^2$

5 years hence,

Ashu age = x + 5

Veena age = $x^2+5$

According to the question;

$\Rightarrow$ $x^2+5=3(x+5)$

$\Rightarrow$ $x^2+5=3x+15$

$\Rightarrow$ $x^2-3x-10=0$

$\Rightarrow$ $(x+2)(x-5)=0$ [By factorisation]

$\Rightarrow$ x = -2 or 5

Since age cannot be -ve, we need to discard the value of x = -2.

x = 5

So, Ashu is 5 yrs and his mother is 25 yrs.
