A beam of white light does not give spectrum on passing through a hollow prism. This is because dispersion of light cannot occur on passing through air contained in a hollow prism. Dispersion takes place because refractive index of a medium for different colour is different. When white light travels from air to air, refractive index remains same and no dispersion occurs.Speed of light outside the prism is more than inside in case of normal prism which is not hollow.
