Solution

The correct option is A Both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation for the assertion
The rate of production of organic matter, by the process of photosynthesis by producers, per unit area over a time period is known as primary productivity. It is expressed in terms of weight (g/m2/year) or energy (kcal/m2/year).

The primary productivity of an ecosystem depends on the plant species inhabiting it. It also increases with better availability of nutrients, longer hours of direct sunlight exposure and higher photosynthetic ability of plants. Increased sunlight exposure leads to greater primary productivity due to higher photosynthetic activity of the producers.

The angle of inclination of sun is less towards the poles and increases as we move towards the tropical zones (region of earth lying between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn). Thus the incident sunlight is more direct on the tropical regions than on the poles. As the sunlight exposure increases from the polar regions towards the tropics, the primary productivity also increases.

Thus, both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation for the assertion.
